“Antonio Romantico” by GrandPa Steve

When do we first understand that we are loved and valued? This song was written for our oldest grandson, Antonio. Antonio and his mother, Vanessa, our daughter, lived with us for the first six months of his life. The voice of the song is Antonio singing about how I imagined he was perceiving his life and what the important things are to an infant—being held, being loved, being talked to, and being validated. Young children have responded to this song in some very positive and interesting ways.

The voice of the song and what it is saying is very close to a younger child’s perception of the world.

I’ve got a mommy, a daddy, two lovin’ aunts.
We live with grandma, and granddad to save on the rent.
They’ve got two dogs and two fish and what do you know,
My name is Antonio Romantico.

I love when mom holds me close, oh she’s so sweet!
When dad talks to me it makes me feel neat.
But most of all I love when they go:
“We love you Antonio Romantico!”

This is my life, I’m here to learn from you!
Give me some time you’ll be so proud of me!
This is the place that I am supposed to be.
I love the way they hold me,
Cause it makes me feel good!
Music (no words)

My two aunties are always fighting over me.
They feed me, they change me, they rock me to sleep.
And as I’m going to dreamland, I can hear them sing low:
“Sleep tight Antonio Romantico!”

My grandma rubs my back and tickles my toes.
Grandpa he writes these songs to help me to grow.
I’m not quite sure what they mean when they go:
“You’re our special boy, Romantico!”

This is my life, I’m here to learn from you!
Give me some time you’ll be so proud of me!
This is the place that I am supposed to be.
I love the way they hold me,
Cause it makes me feel good!
And when they talk to me,
you know, I understood.

I miss the doggies since we moved to our own place.
I’d love to see those fishies, oh they move with grace.
And as I’m sitting in my crib I can almost hear:
“Woof, woof, Antonio Romantico!”
“Blub, blub, Antonio Romantico!”
